RN 29 Role Transition - Bridge (LVN to RN only)
4 units — 45 hours lecture, 45 hours lab
This course is designed for the LVN (Licensed Vocational Nurse) or the advanced placement student for the purpose of transitioning into the role of RN (Registered Nurse). Theory and application of concepts of physical assessment, the nursing process, critical thinking, the relationship of homeostatic mechanisms to fluids and electrolytes and nursing competencies in the professional roles of clinician, teacher, leader and advocate will be presented.
RN 30 Geron-Comm Health Nursing Theory
1 unit — 15 hours lecture
This course provides the third term student with the opportunity to experience a community health setting for the geriatric patient. Characteristics of today’s elderly population will be discussed. A continuum of care will be discussed in community settings including services for the independent and well elderly to the most dependent and ill.
RN 30L Geron-Comm Health Nursing Clinical
1 unit — 45 hours lab
This course consists of Skills Lab and Clinical hours that apply theory concepts of the paired course. This course provides the third term student with the opportunity to experience a community health setting for the geriatric patient. Characteristics of today’s elderly population will be discussed. A continuum of care will be explored in community settings including services for the independent and well elderly to the most dependent and ill. The continuum of care will provide the student with the opportunity to participate in community based settings including home health, ambulatory surgery, Alzheimers, and subacute/rehabilitation agencies.
RN 31R Intermediate Medical Surgical Theory
2 units — 30 hours lecture
In this course the student will synthesize and correlate nursing knowledge and skills in providing care to multiple patients who have complex, multi-system illnesses. Focus will be for the students to predict patient needs and priorities, and evaluate outcomes on care. Associated psychomotor skills will be integrated and practiced.
RN 31RL Intermediate Medical Surgical Clinical
3 units — 135 hours lab
This course consists of Skills Lab and Clinical hours that apply the theory concepts of the paired course. In this course the student will synthesize and correlate nursing knowledge and skills in providing care to adult and pediatric patients who have complex, multi-system illnesses. Clinical site rotations include medical surgical units within adult and pediatric acute care agencies.
RN 32 Nursing Seminar 3: Leadership
2 units — 30 units lecture
This course includes concepts of pharmacology and an overview of professional roles and relationships. Pharmacology content includes Renal Drugs, Immunosuppressant and Chemotherapeutic Agents, Analgesics, Anti-inflammatory, and Anti-rheumatoid Agents. Leadership and management concepts will be applied to varying groups of clients and families within a variety of health care systems.
RN 33 Pediatric Nursing Theory
2 units — 30 hours lecture
Introduction to current theories and concepts in the care of the pediatric client/family with emphasis on wellness and illness. Pediatric nursing focuses on the nursing care of children of various ages and their families. Concepts include disease process, medical treatments, nursing responsibilities, and interventions, cultural, ethical, and legal issues.
RN 33L Pediatric Nursing Clinical
2 units — 90 hours lab
This course consists of Skills Lab and Clinical hours that apply theory concepts in the paired course. Application of specific skills, theories, and concepts in the care of the pediatric client/family with emphasis on wellness and illness.
RN 40 Mental Health-Psych Nursing Theory
2 units — 30 hours lecture
This course provides an introduction to psychiatric mental health nursing using the nursing process to promote psychosocial integrity within the context of the health illness continuum across the life span. Emphasis is on therapeutic interactions and communications, bio-psychosocial rehabilitation and therapeutic use of self. Classroom experiences will prepare students to participate in therapeutic activities in a variety of mental health settings.
RN 40LC Mental Health-Psych Nursing Clinical
1.5 units – 67.5 hours lab
This course consists of Clinical hours that apply theory concepts of the paired course. This course provides an introduction to psychiatric mental health nursing using the nursing process to promote psychosocial integrity within the context of the health illness continuum across the life span. Emphasis is on therapeutic interactions and communications, bio-psychosocial rehabilitation and therapeutic use of self. Clinical experiences will provide opportunities for students to participate in therapeutic activities in a variety of mental health settings.
RN 41 Advanced Medical Surgical Theory
3 units — 45 hours lecture
This course focuses on advanced application of the nursing process in care of critically ill adult and geriatric patients. The student will organize and discriminate data to establish priorities of care. Correlated clinical experiences emphasize refinement of clinical decision making, psychomotor skills and management of patient care in professional nursing practice. Also included in this course the fourth semester nursing student with the opportunity to integrate and apply previously learned skills and knowledge from all areas of nursing practice to new, current, and/or evolving health care settings. Content will include leadership theory and application, delegation, priorities, and time management. The course focuses on assisting the student to transition from student nurse role to that as a licensed nurse. Classroom experiences assist the student to acquire additional proficiency which will assist in securing an entry level registered nurse position.

RN 42 Nursing Seminar 4: Leadership
2 units — 30 hours lecture
This course includes concepts of pharmacology and preparation for a career in nursing. Pharmacology content includes Central Nervous System Drugs-Part 2. Preparation for a career in nursing includes services provided by Career Services Department, resume writing, interview techniques, networking skills, portfolio presentation, and workplace success. The course culminates with a 20 hour NCLEX review course.
